Using Neuro-linguistic programming In Security Jobs

SIA licence training is very thorough, but you can always add more external content to it. SIA training may teach you all about your legal obligations, how to defuse a situation and how to handle it if it is impossible to defuse. But suppose that there was a way to talk your way out of a situation that was going badly?

To actually reprogram the thinking of somebody having a bad night and taking it out on you? Just by talking to them, in the produce aisle of a supermarket or outside a club at 1 am? There is a way; it’s called Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP for short), and here are three tips on how it can help you with your job.

1. The Picture is not the Object

We all have different perspectives on things. Two blindfolded men trying to describe an elephant by touch will give very different views. You know your view, and it is right for you. But once you realise that you can start to see the view of the person you are talking to, whilst keeping your own one. The guy shouting and waving his arms, maybe just feeling a bit small and put upon. Let him leave with dignity and give him back his pride could de-escalate the situation.

2. You are always communicating

You are constantly giving out communication, both verbal and none verbal. Are you folding your arms or holding them by your sides to make yourself look bigger? Is your tone of voice sarcastic? Do you interrupt? Do you lean into somebody else’s personal space? Make yourself aware of your non-verbal communications, and ask friends, loved ones and colleagues how you come over. Soon you will be able to modify your non-verbal communication, so you are both respectful and respect-worthy, which is where you want to be when you have an SIA licence.

3. People make decisions that seem best at the time

You would never run into a busy road, would you? But maybe if you were being chased by a hungry lion, you might consider it. People make the most appropriate decision at the time they are making it. If you are checking someone’s ID with a card reader and something flashes up that they don’t want you to know. Bear in mind that the urge for them to run may be the most sensible thing in the world. Be aware that people will decide what is logical at the time. Just like you did when you put in for your SIA licence.

How to work in the security sector

If you are interested in working in the security sector, whether it be as a Door Supervisor, Security Guard or CCTV Operative, you will need to obtain an SIA Licence.

To obtain an SIA Licence, you will need to complete a course. Once you have completed the course, will you then be able to apply for an SIA Licence and work in the security sector.
