Get the APLH course for free

A typical way that people enter the hospitality industry is by taking a part-time job as a bartender or server in a local pub. It’s a pretty cool job and can be a lot of fun interacting with people in a relaxed and party mood. It’s a great way to socialise while pocketing yourself some cash at the same time.

However, some people love the atmosphere and work so much they decide to make it a career. The obvious downside to staying as a casual bartender is that aside from perhaps earning some tips from some friendly customers, you can guarantee you won’t be earning much more than the minimum wage.

If you want to move up and look at becoming a bar supervisor, manager and eventually running your own premises and being a landlord, you will need to take steps. No one is going to gift you a promotion after all!

A great way to do this is by showing your employer you have initiative and are prepared to work a little in your own time to prove your worth.

Here at Get Licensed, we are offering you a golden opportunity to take the APLH course for free. Can you imagine how impressed your boss would be if you told them you have already learned the APLH course and are ready to take your exam? You will show them you are a hard worker and an incredibly useful team member. And you’ll have saved your boss some money by not paying for the course.

Here’s the deal

The APLH course is a requirement needed by people who want a licence to serve alcohol, and every premises that serve alcohol needs to have one licence holder. The course offered is the BIIAB level 2 Award for Personal Licence Holders (APLH), which is required as part of the Licensing act of 2003.

While you only need one licence per pub, if your landlord were sent by the brewery to another pub temporarily, the brewery would need to fall back on a separate APLH holder to be the temporary licensee. That’s why there is often more than one licence holder working at one premises and why holding the licence can be advantageous for both you and the brewery. You could be given more responsibility quickly, but only if you have the licence.

You might think this will be a long course, but it only takes a day. Because the course doesn’t require physical skills and is just learning information, it translates well to video eLearning. The course is often taken online, especially since those in the hospitality business are often busy.

You can take the course in just 6 hours, and it is entirely free. All you need to do is enter your email to have the course content delivered to your inbox.

What will I learn?

The course is delivered in bite-size video eLearning lessons covering the following:

  • Introduction
  • Licensing objectives
  • Personal licences
  • Premises licences
  • Designated premises supervisor
  • Temporary events notice
  • The protection of children
  • Legal rights and duties
  • Prohibition and exemptions

Once you have watched the 6-hour course, which you can do whenever you have a spare half an hour or so, you can take free mock exams to see how well you have absorbed the content. The exam is a 40-question multiple choice answer test with 28 correct answers being the pass mark.

Taking the exam and getting your licence.

If you want to take the exam to have your learning recognised as a qualification, all you need to do is book an exam date and a time slot. The fee for this is £99. Before the exam, you’ll have a call with a trainer to ensure you have everything you need and understand the instructions. On successful completion, you will have your qualification sent to you electronically.

All you have to do is apply to your local council to approve your licence. The fee for this is £37, and there is also a fee of around £25-40 for a criminal background check. If you are not a fan of paperwork, you can opt to have a dedicated application manager deal with this for you for a fee.
