What Does Door Supervisor Training Involve?

One of the most important or dominant roles within the security industry is door supervision. The door supervisor is the only member of the security guard team, whom the customer will encounter in his first instance.

What is a Door Supervisor?

The main aim of the door supervisor is to provide a safe, comfortable and tension-free atmosphere where they work. It includes keeping the unwanted people away from the premises without causing any harm to the authentic customers who are there for just fun and to enjoy their day. It is important that no disturbance is created as it can be reflected in customer relations. The door supervisors have a high-profile job and hence it is required that they should carry out their responsibilities skillfully and intelligently.

Most of the time, The role of the door supervisors is quite straight. Their main aim is to maintain the venue policies such as the minimum age limit for the entry and number of times, and the dress code should be proper for the visitor if any. If the visitor accomplishes all the required details he/ she should be let in with a warm welcome and if the visitor fails to fulfil the conditions he or should be restricted politely, and the force should only be applied, if conditions get out of control. Other duties include keeping a check on fire safety requirements, and occupancy limits and to protect the occurrence of deadlocks at the entrance and emergency exits.

Summarising all this we can say that the role of the door supervisor is to keep order at the premises in the terms of law and for the safety of the visitors. For this, a door supervisor needs to have the relevant knowledge of the law, and conflict resolution and the most important thing is, that he should be good at dealing with the customers that are good communicating skills.

What is Door Supervisor training?

To regulate their duties perfectly, the door supervisors are to undergo a specific door supervising training course. Many security industry companies provide this course, SIA being the most recognised one. In the security industry, there are new challenges, encountered every day, the SIA training assured that they are capable of doing their job effectively and efficiently. Apart from making them different from others in the industry, this course increases their confidence and competence in the door supervisors. This course is a balance of the theoretical and practical approaches, hence it develops the skills necessary for the successful regulation of the duties of the door supervision.

The door Supervision training course is designed to educate the door supervisors about the laws governing licensed premises, their management ethics and the best behaviour in dealing with the common public. Under the licensing act of 2003, a premises License has been made compulsory, in order to accomplish any kind of Business activity. The licence will be issued by the local authority.

The course by the SIA on the door supervision deals with the different range of subjects that help or make the individual capable to perform his job at the optimum level. The duration of the course is almost four days. The course includes Thirty classroom Hours and two hours of examination. This is split into two halves, the first one based on responsibilities and is entitled “Role and Responsibilities of Door Supervisors in the security Industry Environment.”. It starts with an introduction about the roles of the door supervisors and extends to the other ten modules, which in combination give a complete understanding of all the legal requirements and entitlements associated with the Door Supervisor. The other modules include;

  • Health and Safety measures.
  • Actions in emergency conditions.
  • The role and responsibilities of the door supervisor.
  • Licensing law.
  • Drugs Awareness

This section covers the hypothetical considerations regarding the work of a door supervisor.

The second half of the course is entitled “Conflict Management and Communication Skills”. This section includes the practical part of the course and deals with the communication skills and the ability of the individual to handle the stress conditions. The main course involves in this half includes:

  • Assessing the cause of the violence and reducing the risk.
  • Communication skills.
  • Identify the Suspected behaviour and take the appropriate steps required.
  • Taking post-incident actions to provide the information for personal and institutional learning

The course is designed to provide the framework of education, for those who want to excel there careers in the field of the security industry, providing the relevant knowledge and skills to the candidates and most importantly giving the individuals, opportunities to develop their personal qualities and the attitude necessary for their success in the working life.

The course an accomplished with the help of PowerPoint presentations, and group work to help the candidate get the complete information and to take the maximum from the course.
