All About Applying For A Temporary Event Notice

If you are thinking of holding an event and selling alcohol and don’t have a premises license you’ll need a Temporary Event Notice (TEN).

What is a TEN?

A Temporary Event Notice allows you to hold licensable events at unlicensed premises. By applying for a TEN you don’t need a premises licence or the presence of a personal licence holder.

How do I apply for a one?

The steps for applying for a TEN are:

  1. Your application should be sent to your local council.

  2. The application must be submitted ten days before the planned event.

  3. The application will be reviewed and rejected or approved.

Not getting one can lead to a fine or a prison sentence of up to six months.

What can I do with a TEN?

A licensable activity applies to the sale or supply of alcohol but also to the serving of hot food between 11pm and 5am. You’ll also need a TEN if you are planning to open outside of your normal licensed hours.

You might not know, regulated entertainment also requires a TEN. Regulated entertainment are any of the list that happen in front of an audience.

What is licensable activity?

  • Recorded music (between 11pm and 8am)

  • Karaoke (between 11pm and 8am)

  • Unamplified live music (between 11pm and 8am)

  • Amplified live music (between 11pm and 8am)

  • Play or dance performance (between 11pm and 8am)

  • Indoor sporting event (between 11pm and 8am)

  • Film screening

  • Boxing, wrestling or martial arts

  • Adult entertainment

Who can object to my application?

The Police can object to your application if they believe it may lead to crime and disorder. Once you submit your application, the Police have two working days to make any objections known.

Are there restrictions?

Getting a TEN doesn’t mean you can do anything there are some restrictions.

  1. You can have up to 499 people at your event.
  2. Normally licensing laws apply including the restriction of the sale of alcohol to minors and to drunk people.

What is I am late with my TEN application?

If you miss the 10 days before deadline, you can apply for a late TEN. This application has to be submitted five days before your event.

How many can I apply for?

The number of TEN applications varies whether you have a personal alcohol license. Without an APLH you can:

  1. Apply for five TENs a year.

  2. Apply for two late TENs.

With an APLH you can:

  1. Apply for 50  TENs.

  2. Apply for 10 late TENS.

How to get a Personal Licence

Thinking of applying for a Personal Licence? The Personal Licence Training Course teaches individuals about the law and legal responsibility of being a licence holder and is part of the process for obtaining a Personal Alcohol Licence.

Once you have passed the Personal Licence Course, you will then be able to apply for a Personal Licence.
