Preparing For Your SIA Licence Training Course

So, you’ve decided to pursue a career in front-line security. That’s a big step, and we’re here to help you along the way. Protecting people and property is a respected and important job, and you can certainly be proud of your choice.

There are however several steps you will need to take before you can legally be employed in the security industry.

Private Security Industry Act 2001 and Its Impact

Over twenty years ago, the security industry was a very different place. Stories of door supervisors involved in illegal activities, violence, and corruption were common. The need to protect the public led to the introduction of the Private Security Industry Act 2001. This law created the Security Industry Authority (SIA) to regulate the industry.

To clean up the industry, mandatory personal licensing was introduced. To get an SIA licence, you need to meet two key requirements:

  • Approved Training: You must complete SIA-approved basic security training to ensure you meet the standards required for the job.
  • DBS Check: You must pass a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check. If you have a criminal record, it may affect your ability to get a licence (with certain exceptions and conditions).

If you’re wondering whether you can get an SIA licence with a criminal record, we’ve got a detailed guide that covers everything you need to know—Can I Get an SIA Licence with a Criminal Record?

Steps to Start Your Security Career with SIA Training

To start your security career, you need to complete two essential tasks:

  1. Pass an SIA licence training course.
  2. Apply for your SIA licence.

One of the most highly regarded SIA licence training networks in the UK is Get Licensed. With high quality training materials, regulated standards for their approved trainers, and over 85 locations across the UK, there is no wonder they receive outstanding reviews from those who book courses through them.

Important Note: Only attend legitimate SIA-approved security training courses. There have been reports of fraud and malpractice in the past, with people paying extra to buy a training pass certificate without completing the course. This is illegal, dangerous, and could lead to prosecution and banning from the industry.

How to Book Your SIA Licence Training Course

So, first things first. Before you can book your training, you’ll need to gather some documents. You must provide proof of your identity and address. Typically, you’ll need:

  • Proof of Identity: A photo passport, residence permit, driving licence, or birth certificate. Two forms of ID are usually required.
  • Proof of Address: Two documents, such as bank statements, utility bills, HMRC letters, or council tax letters, dated within three months of your course application.

If you need to prove your right to work in the UK, you’ll also need to provide the appropriate documentation.

Once you have the required paperwork, you’ll be able to book your course. Make sure you choose the right course for your needs. For example, don’t book an SIA Door Supervisor course if you don’t plan to work at licensed premises. The Door Supervisor course includes additional physical intervention training, which makes it longer and more expensive. If you don’t need that training, the standard security guard training course will be just fine.

Pre-Course Preparation: What You Need for SIA Training

Once your course is booked, there are a few more things to do before day one.

Complete ACT Online Counter-Terrorism Training:

This is now compulsory. You’ll need to complete two online courses (general and security personnel-based) and get pass certificates for both before starting your SIA training.

Emergency First Aid Training:

Your SIA training will include a mandatory emergency first aid course. You may need to do some basic first aid pre-reading, which will usually be tested online.

E-Learning Modules:

Before attending the course, you’ll need to complete a series of e-learning videos with quiz questions. It’s important to finish these modules, as not doing so might result in having to rebook your training.

Once you have finished your e-learning, and this has been verified, it’s a good idea to take some mock exams and do further preparation. If you’ve booked your course through Get Licensed or the GuardPass app, you’ll have access to free SIA mock exams and additional training materials to help you feel fully prepared for the course and the final tests.

How to Apply for Your SIA Licence After Training

Congratulations! You’ve completed your course and passed. Now it’s time to apply for your SIA licence. The application process is entirely online and currently costs £184. Your licence will need to be renewed every three years, with the licence fee paid each time.

The whole process can feel a bit overwhelming, but don’t worry—GuardPass is here to help you through every step, from getting your training to finding the perfect security job.
